A Fourth of July Prayer

Happy Independence Day!

Today is dedicated to the birth of our nation, so let’s celebrate the freedoms and liberties we enjoy! Our forefathers gave their lives for the next generations of their families, and we are forever in their debt. Praise God their sacrifices were not in vain.

After the Revolutionary War, George Washington wrote a prayer to all of the governors of the United States announcing his retirement from the Continental Army. May we echo his prayer as our own when he said,

George Washington Prayer at Valley Forge

“I now make it my earnest prayer that God would have you in His holy protection … and that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind, which were characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose examples in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.”

We thank God for the freedoms that we enjoy today – the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the freedom of the press. We are thankful for these freedoms, but we would be remiss to ignore the origin of these freedoms — God our Father, in whom we place our hope and our trust. He is the author of all life and alone gives true freedom. However, when we walk in God’s gift of freedom, we extend the fruit of that blessing to all around us! The Apostle Paul said,

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm…For you were called to freedom…only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Gal. 5:1,13).

Today, we honor those who serve to protect our freedom and seek to live a life of loving service to those in our communities.

Let’s unite in focused prayer today!  Pray for…

  • People in our nation and around the world to know the true freedom found in Christ

  • Preservation and expansion of our religious freedom

  • Our President, Executive Branch, our US Congress, and Supreme Court

  • Protection, strength and honor for all of our veterans and active military personnel

  • Renewal, Unity, and Spiritual Awakening in our land

Will you join me in prayer this week?

Father, we celebrate the freedoms and liberties You have given us and are grateful for Your Hand of blessing upon the United States of America. We acknowledge You as our Source and Sustainer! You have made us free!

Today, we also cry out for those across the world who are not able to experience the freedoms we enjoy and ask You to bring liberty to them and their nations. May their hearts and the hearts of their leaders be turned toward you.

You declare in Your Word ‘Blessed is the nation who’s God is the Lord!’ Let us humble ourselves and declare that You are OUR Lord! As we celebrate all that is right with our nation, we also seek You to heal all that is wrong.  Bring us together, give our leaders solutions to unite our citizens and fix systems of injustice that marginalize and oppress.  Protect us, lead us, and draw us closer to You.  May Your Kingdom come and Your Will be done here in our land – in our day!

In Jesus’ Name!  Amen!
