In light of our current national climate and the recent Executive Order, PROTECTING THE NATION FROM FOREIGN TERRORIST ENTRY INTO THE UNITED STATES, we stand as followers of Jesus Christ who are blessed to be citizens of this great country. Our biblical mandate is to show hospitality, to welcome the sojourner, and to care for the marginalized, persecuted, and disadvantaged. For centuries, the Church of Jesus has led the way in caring for the ‘least of these’ and shining light on inequity, injustice, disparity, and oppression – bringing hope and lifting people out of despair.
We also sincerely believe that God has ordained government as an extension of His authority and as ‘God’s servant for our good’ (Romans 13:4). One biblical responsibility of government and it's leaders is to serve, protect, and defend its people and national sovereignty. Though sometimes these two values – welcoming the stranger and securing our nation – are held in difficult tension, we believe it is possible to follow God’s command to do both. Because of this, we continue to pray. Pray for rulers and their governments to rule well, so we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:2-4).
We pray our national leaders will make wise decisions to protect the freedoms given us by God, and we commit to demonstrating the love, care, and compassion of Jesus to all those who find solace in our land. Above all, we will continue to walk in unity, discernment, and as a reconciling force for God’s good in the world.
